Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Volunteer Saber Technician to join our instructional staff for the upcoming winter season. The ideal candidate possesses a strong technical foundation in competitive saber techniques, a passion for student development, and a commitment to the artistic excellence of the ensemble.
As a technician, you will work closely with the director and design team to implement the seasonal curriculum, refine individual member techniques, and clean choreographed phrases to ensure a cohesive and high-level production.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Instruction
- Lead specialized saber blocks focusing on fundamental skills: hilt/blade spins, flourishes, and varied toss releases.
- Correct individual body and posture to ensure all members achieve a uniform “look” during equipment phrases.
- Break down complex choreography into manageable counts for students of varying skill levels.
Rehearsal Management
- Assist in the “cleaning” process by identifying and correcting synchronization issues within the saber line.
- Provide constructive, real-time feedback during full-ensemble runs and sectional rehearsals.
- Collaborate with the design team to make minor adjustments to choreography if necessary for student success or visual clarity.
Mentorship & Safety
- Foster a positive, disciplined, and inclusive learning environment.
- Monitor equipment maintenance and ensure students are handling sabers safely during high-velocity maneuvers.
- Act as a professional role model, upholding the values and standards of the organization.
Qualifications
- Experience: Previous experience performing in a competitive winter guard or drum corps ensemble, specifically within a weapon line a plus.
- Technical Proficiency: Mastery of standard saber vocabulary and the ability to demonstrate advanced tosses and transitions with clarity.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to explain abstract movement concepts in concrete terms.
- Availability: Must be available for weekend rehearsals and scheduled competitions throughout the winter season.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals.
- Ability to demonstrate physical movement and equipment maneuvers.
- Comfort working in gymnasium environments with high noise levels.
