Job Opportunity: Volunteer Floor Crew Lead
Reports To: Logistics Manager
Position Type: Volunteer (Seasonal / Weekend-Heavy)
Location: Regional Travel & Performance Venues
Position Summary
Are you organized, calm under pressure, and love being right in the center of the action? We are seeking a dedicated Volunteer Floor Crew Lead to manage the logistics, handling, and execution of our performance floor and props.
In winter guard, every second counts. The Floor Crew Lead ensures our performer’s stage is set perfectly and cleared efficiently within strict competitive time limits. Reporting directly to the Logistics Manager, you will lead a team of volunteers to manage backstage transitions, floor folding, and prop logistics on rehearsal and competition days.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Recruit, coordinate, and brief the volunteer floor/prop crew before every performance. Assign specific roles for entering and exiting the competition floor.
- Logistics & Timing: Oversee the timed setup and teardown of the floor tarp and props during competitive events, ensuring the ensemble remains well within circuit time limits to avoid penalties.
- Equipment Management: Supervise the proper rolling, folding, taping, and storage of the performance floor and props after rehearsals and shows to prevent wear and tear.
- Liaison: Coordinate directly with the Logistics Manager and circuit back-stage staff regarding logistics, timing, truck loading, and venue-specific floor rules.
- Safety First: Ensure all floor crew members follow safety protocols when lifting heavy equipment and navigating crowded backstage hallways.
Key Qualifications & Skills
- Leadership Experience: Ability to confidently direct a small team of adults/volunteers in a fast-paced environment.
- Composure Under Pressure: Stadium environments can be loud and hectic; the ideal candidate stays focused, clear-headed, and encouraging.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy vinyl floors and props alongside the crew.
- Punctuality: Exceptional time management skills are a must.
- Color Guard Knowledge (Plus): Prior experience with drum corps, marching band, or winter guard floor crews is highly valued, but not required—we will train the right leader!
Time Commitment
This is a seasonal volunteer position running from January through April.
- Attendance at major weekend rehearsal camps (as needed for floor choreography/timing runs).
- Mandatory attendance at all weekend competitive events (Saturdays and occasional Sundays).
Benefits & Perks
- Behind-the-Scenes Access: Be on the floor and in the tunnel for every performance, experiencing the energy of the competitive circuit firsthand.
- Community: Join a passionate, supportive network of educators, performers, and creators.
